About PNG to ICO Converter
ICO is the icon container Windows and browsers expect at favicon.ico. Starting from a PNG is the ideal path because PNG already carries the alpha channel an icon needs — the transparent corners that let a rounded logo sit cleanly on any tab background. The output here embeds PNG data inside the ICO wrapper, which keeps edges crisp instead of the jagged results older BMP-based ICO encoders produce.

Design for the size it will actually be seen at. A browser tab renders your favicon at roughly 16 to 32 pixels, so fine detail and small text turn to mush no matter how good the source is — reduce the logo to a single bold shape or letterform before converting. Start from a square PNG at 256×256 or larger with a genuinely transparent background, not a white one, or you will get a white square in dark-mode browser tabs. What size PNG should I start with for a favicon?
A square PNG at least 256×256px works best. ICO output is capped at 256px on the longest side, so starting smaller than that (or non-square) can produce a blurry or stretched icon.
Why does my site need an .ico file if PNG favicons work too?
Most browsers and Windows still look for /favicon.ico by default, and ICO can embed multiple resolutions in one file for different display contexts (browser tabs, bookmarks, taskbar).
Does PNG to ICO conversion lose quality?
No. The PNG's pixel data is embedded in the ICO container without re-compression — quality only suffers if the source image is smaller than the target icon size and gets scaled up.
